But! You as a player in a casual multiplayer format, have a responsibility to match the rest of the table, unles other rules are agreed upon like cEDH. You have any right to build the deck you want to play. You should still match your deck with the rest of the table though. But if you have no way to consistently get it, and play it early, as most cEDH decks wants to, then its just an easy combo. With that said, Thassa oracle does not make a cEDH deck alone, even with Demonic consultation.

If i just wanted to win i would go play chess against a computer. When i sit down i play to win, but i want an even match as much as possible. But when i play, i play to have a good time with other poepl. Yes Magic is be a game, and a game needs a winner. Unless you are a sad cunt, there is no fun in showing up to a game, with a deck, that clearly outclasses, the other decks at the table (unless they are in on it). If everyone agrees on playing cEDH, then sure, no problems. It is also up to the player(s) to check with the rest of the table, what they are playing. Both of those are power level issues, not Thassa's Oracle issues.Īgain, that is up to the player to choose and put the cards in their deck or not to do it. The people making that decision are either brewing high power decks or they are choosing to play high power strategies against casual decks. Choosing to play Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation is a deliberate choice to play a 2-card instant win combo the same way choosing to play a similar combo like Dramatic Scepter or a combo-centric deck like Godo + Helm. It's not a case of something like Paradox Engine where an appealing-looking card creates bad game experiences for people who weren't intending to ruin the fun. At some point you are either playing in a high power game or you're not, and if someone is bringing something too strong for the rest of the table it's the responsibility of everybody playing to make sure the decks being played are balanced because the number of format-legal ways to dumpster casual tables with easy overpowered strategies is limitless. It's easy to say that Thassa's Oracle is not fun to lose to if you're not playing powerful decks against it, but it's also easy to say that about the countless other fast / instant-win combos and powerful commanders in the format. If people are playing powerful combo decks, Thassa's Oracle is not necessary and the problem would persist without her. In the context of "my LGS is problematic because I have to fight Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation combo regularly," I disagree.
